Fancy Dress Ball

There was a large attendance at the children's fancy dress ball, repeated at the Opera House last night, in aid of the funds of the Palmerston N. Brass Band. Both up and downstairs spectators were numerous, and the effect of the vari-coloured dresses of the numerous children on the stage, together with the animation infused into the scene by the ceaseless fitting to and fro, was pleasing in the extreme. The little folk got through the mimerous dances remarkably well, thanks to the very .'great pains that had been taken with them by Miss Wright, who has taken a prominent part in connection with both fixtures. To her, in a very great measure, may be ascribed the success thathas followed each presentation. A special feature of last evening was a poi dance by the Misses McEwen, in Maori costume. The time kept in the graceful measure was excellent and the youthful performers were loudly applauded at the finish. Misses Duff, Bierre, McGrath and Brough, together with Messrs Manson, AVood, Cope and Harris, repeated the cake dance in excellent style and were lavishly applauded. Subsequently considerable amusement was caused by a number of _ the children attempting a similar dance in their fancy costumes Mr W. T. Wood, M.H.R., expressed the thanks of the promoters of the function for the very cordial support that had been extended to it. He also briefly alluded to the very deserving object of the production, viz., the augmentation of the funds of the P.N. Brass Band.

Members of the band played the selection - " Meyerbeer " during the. evening, and Mr Fox also contributed a cornet solo, which was admirably played. - . Mr. Pringle, manager of the band, together with Messrs Collingwood, H. Palmer, McFerran and others were indefatigable in their, attention to'details, and to this close supervision must be ascribed, together with the exertions of the Ladies' Committee, the great success .that attended the production.
