Literary Society.

The Literary and Debating Society opened its session last evening by holding a musical evening at the Society's room in the Fire Brigade Hall. The Society is to be complimented on the success of its initial evening of the session, both as regards the attendance, the hall being almost full to overflowing, and the excellence of the musical programme. The musical portion was arranged by Mr H. E. Gunter, which, of course, was itself a sufficient guarantee that something high-class and entertaining would be provided. The whole proceedings were most enthusiastic and successful, which augurs well for the success of the Society during the coming session, and it is to be hoped that the term begun under such favorable auspices will be a prosperous one. Mr B. Leary ably occupied the chair, and the programme was as follows :— Pianoforte duet, Mrs Fitzherbert and Mr Gunter ; song, » The White Squall," Mr A. E. Bennett; reading, " The Belief of Ladysmith in a German Town," Mr Ford; song, "The Angel at the Win dow," Miss G. Drew ; pianoforte, " Valse in A flat," Mr Gunter; recitation, " The Valour of Splendid Silence," Miss Chisholm ; song, "The Nightwatchman," Rev. H. F. "Wilson ; reading, " Eubenstein's Playing," Mr E. Leary ; duet pianoforte, "Norwegian Dance," Mrs Fitzherbert and Mr Gunter ; song, "The Miner," Mr P. Torstonsen ; reading, " Eienzi's appeal to theEomans," MrG. Grant ; violin solo, " II Troyatore," Mr T. Kitchen ; flute solo, Mr Woolhouse ; song, " The Wreckers," Mr Permain ; song, " Ora Pro Nobis," the Misses Drew.

Mr Webster moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Gunter and those who had assisted with the programme, which was carried by acclamation.

Mr Leary referred to the laudable objects of the Society, viz., the culture of the literary talent of the youth of the town, and urged those present who were not already members to join the Society at once.

The proceedings were brought to a close by the singing of the National Anthem.
