LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The Grand old steamer Great Britain, once the pride of Australia, has been con* verted into a sailing collier. Sic transit. To«day was St. Patrick's Day, but we did not notice that there was any undue manifestation on the part of worshippers of Ireland's patron saint. There is to be a costume cricket match at Wanganui, during the Easter Encamp* merit, which it is expected willjbe productive of considerable amusement. While the Wanganui river was injured for shipping purposes by the late floodf j the Patea river has been improved to such an extent that it i 3 said never to have been m a better condition. During the past week there has not been a single cablegram from Home, and there has been considerable speculation as to the cause, although it was generally anticu pated that some mishap had occurred to the cable. Tin's, appears to have been 'he case, for by a Melbourne cablegram sent yesterday we learn that there is a proba« bility of the cable to Java being restored shortly. In consequence of the interrupwe are a good way behind hand m European news. [By our budget of English news, it will be seen that cable communication has been restored.] Until recently the G-isborne "City Fathers" used to smoke at their meetings. This came to be considered a scandal, so the Major has issued an edict that there shall be no smoking—until 1 0 o'clock. The funeral of Mr T. JJ. Vallemine, a prominent Victorian bicyclist, was attended by a hundred bicyclists. They were dressed m the uniforms of thair various clubs, and followed the mourning coaches on foot, four deep wheeling their machines behind them. It is said that the state the Colony is m I just now ia not a prosperous one, as there are more insolvencies lately than any previous years, although the amounts are not large, which shows that it is the smaller people who are being " whitewashed." An exchange has the following :—"The Americans are said to have discovered a new remedy. It has the advantage of simplicity, for it consist of half a glass of very hot water.'taken morningand evening, or whenever a " pick-me«up" is required. It ia said to cure gout, rheumatism, indigestion, dyspepsia, and many other of the complaints to which flesh is heir. It is well spoken of by a considerable number of people, and notably by those whose braina are heavily taxed." We may state that the undoubted virtues of the above remedy have been satisfactory demon* strated m many cases m Manawatu within over own knowledge. A Wairarapa paper reports that King Tawhiao has announcsd his intention of going to Salt Lake City, unless all the Maoris consent to become Mormons, and practise the peculiar ceremonies of that religion m their native country. The Waipawa Mail strongly advocates m a logical and forcible article the ueces* sity for an extended parcels posfc. Mr Larcomb is inciting fresh tenders for alterations and addition to residence m Stoney Creek. Mr McDowell has just returned from Wellington, havingextensively replenished the stock m the Cash Warehouse, and to use his own words, being determined to flood the Manawatu with good saleable drapery of all kinds* He informs us that the business done m his establishment during the last half year has been large entirely beyond anticipation, which speaks well for the district, and also for the business management of the Caah Warehouse. At last night's Government parade of the Palmerston North Volunteers a de* cision was arrived at with regard to the colour of the uniforms to be obtained dark blue being that selected. Mr B. Pepper has a notice elsewhere with regard an unclaimed saddle, to which theowner should do well to pay attention. Backward ratepayers should cash up with out delay, as the Borough is determined to take legal proceedings for tbe recovery of all rates remaining unpaid on the 31st J insfc. Defaulting ratepayers are also debarred from the privilege of voting at licensing or other elections held within the Borough Tuesday next is fixed by the Governor for opening the shooting season for native game, instead of Thursday,
