OUR VOLUNTEERS.
It is satisfactory to iwtica that the esprit de corps hitherto characteristic of the Palmerston North Rifle Volunteers is not on the wane, even under the stringent and admittedly uncompromising new regulations under which they are now enrolled. At last night's Government parade, thirty«one members were present out of a total number of thirty-six, which shows that the corps is determined to keep m existence. In order to induce a spirit of active emu'iition, we are pleased to learn that the officers and non.«comurissioned officers of the company have, with praiseworthy liberality, determined to offer prizes to be compofced for on the Queen's Birthday.,: It is also a source of gratification to know that Palmerscon will not be unrepresented at the Easter Volunteer Encampment to be held m Wanganui, about twenty members having signified their intention of being present We trust the full strength of the corps will soon be reached, and thsifc our young men will readily join and study to acquire proficiency. We hope before long to see a frequent turn out of our local defenders, accompanied by their band, both of which should be a credit to themselves and the community. We cordially wish our local volunteers continued success, and an increased measure of the spirit of true unanimity.
