BORING FOR ARTESIAN WATER.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —Isend you thsfollowingparticularsof boring at Eweburn. You will observe that the various strata since last report are of a greater thickness, and are composed chiefly of clay, or, to use the proper term, pappa rock. You will understand that clay, or pappa, is impervious, to water, but in the beds of sand mentioned there is a... little water. The last mentioned bed of sand contains more than the ones passed through previously, although it does not show quite as high a rise as the one I got at 340 feet, which also goes a long way to prove that those beds are not connected. If they were the level would be the same.
The contract depth (500 ft) was reached a few weeks sgo. Operations were then suspended for a time, as it was necessarj for me to go to Christchurch on business in connection with the work, and otherwise. During that time arrangements were.. made to continue boring to a depth of 850 ft. I selected allmaterial to be used for continuing the bore, but, owing to the bad weather, it only arrived ou the ground to-day. It will take some few days to get things in position to start again. As I found in the boring that has already been doue, that, owing to the lard nature of the greater portion of the ground, that I should have to put on additional machinery to do the turning. The last 100 feet bored took two men to turn the drill. It is £thatj' the bore will shortly have to be reduced to a smaller size, as it was not intended to take the first lot of casing down to inuch greater depth than that already reached ; but the full size will be kept to as deep as possible, and it is only w hen absolutely necessary that telescoping will be done. I subjoin particulars of strata : 340ffc to 360ft.—Sand, blue. 380 ft to 470ft.—Pappa. 470 ft to 4Soft.—Sand, blue. 480 ft to 500ft.—Pappa. 500 ft to 504ft.-Sand. George Smith, Well-borer.
