Twelve candidates were nominated to-day for the Dunedin Central Licensing, Committee, including all proposed for Dunedin South yesterday, with the addition of Messrs' Robin Donaldson, and Leslie. ForLindon, one of the Eoslyn Districts, only three were nominated, so that that Governor will have to appoint 2. Wellington and Christeburch intend, engaging a professional cricketer as coach. A to be formed to reclaim Pelichet Bay, in-order a Park, which will include a "cricket ground, a running track, and, if possible, a racecourse. It is understood n that his Excellency, family, a&d suite, will leave for Christchurch on Friday next. It is expected he will be absent about three months, returning in time to open Parliament in May.
CABLEGRAMS. London, February 8. In the House of Commons to-day Mr Gladstone was questioned as to what action, if" any, the Government proposed to take in regard to the persecution of Jews in Eussia. In reply the Premier . deplored- the ''outrages, and stated that the question was an internal, not an international one. The Government would,-how-ever, intercede with the Russian authorities, when a fitting occasion arose. * ■■"'...*'■'' There is no foundation for the report, which has been current, to the effect that Earl Granviile has verbally protested to the Russian Ambassador against the recent treaty settling the Hussian-Persian frontier.
