Sir Walter Carncross not only holds the- record as Speaker of the

Legislative Council, having been continuously in' that position. since November 1, 1018, but also is politically the “father of Parliament,” He first entered the House of Representatives on December 18, 1890 as member for Taieri, and held his seat until 1902. For a time he was Whip for the Seddon Government. A year later he was called to the Council. Seven years later he was appointed Chairman of Committees, serving in that office for eight years. Sir William, who for many years was an active journalist, was. horn in Bendigo 79 years ago. He does not look his age.
