BIG MAORI GATHERING
CROWNING OF NATIVE “KING.”

The Wjaahi Pa, across the Waikato River from Huntlv, is at present the scene of extensive pre-
parations for a great gathering o Natives at the Aveek-end, to com memorate the first anniversary o the croAvning of the 24-year-oh
Ivoroki te WheroAvhero, fifth in the line.of Maori “kings” since the election in 1858 of Potatau te
WheroAvhero, to lead the Natives ii the A'exed question of land acquisition. Over 2000. Natives are expected to be present at the gathering, Avhich will be one of the largest Maori assemblies for some years.
Those present Avill include representatives of all tribes, among them AraAvas and East Coast Natives, Avho stood aloof ' from the
“king” movement. It is authoritatively stated that the forthcoming assembly Avill represent a very distinct rapprochement between sectional interests among the Maoris. Great interest will also attach to the presence of Rat-ana, the Wanganui “prophet,” AA’ho has announced hi.s intention of attend-
ing AAath a representation of his folloAvers.
