DEFENCE VOTE INCREASED
COAST DEFENCES TO BE STRENGTHENED.
Referring to criticism of the Defence Department Vote in the House yesterday, the Hon. J. G. Cobbe said) he thought members Avould agree it Avas time that the coast defences Avere strengthened. The present guns would be of little use in dealing Avith a modern c-ruiser or raider. The new guns Avould have considerably greater range than the present guns, and Avould be of the very latest pattern and incorporate the most modern ideas. What Avas being done was necessary.
Mr W .E. Barnard moved to reduce the A’ote by £SO as a protest against an increase in the vote Avhile people were going Avithout necessaries of life. The amendment Avas lost by 3/ votes to 18.
The following votes Avere passed Native Affairs £59,000 Native Trustees’ Ac. £12,500 Transport £25,000 Defence £524,600 Naval Defence £453,037
