ACHIEVING SUCCESS
Courage, faith, enthusiasm, and industry Avere among the attributes necessary for the attainment of success quoted by Dr. William G. Fern in an address to the Auckland Creditmen’s Club, states the “NeAV Zealand Herald.” “Every man has to face the problem of personal success,” said Dr. Fern, referring his listeners to Sir James Barrie’s rectorial address at St. AndreAv’s University, when the famous author stated that without courage nothing else Avas possible. “It. is one of the cardinal and fundamental qualities making for success,” continued the speaker. “To succeed, a man must dare to be different, although no man who has stood alone has, ever been free from criticism. It is the fashion of public life to criticise the man who is getting on with the job.” Dealing Avith the attribute of faith, Dr. Fern said it was another citadel in man’s personality Avhieh others would attempt to destroy. Everyone Avho had belief would be attacked. “All movements have depended on men Avho have believed in them at all costs,” the speaker remarked. “If you ha\ T e enthusiasm for one ideal you are bound to succeed, and success is not necessarily conee'rned Avith material gain, but is the attainment of a definite ideal.” To illustrate his statement, Dr. Fern paid a tribute to the selfsacrificing work for the blind done bv Sir lan Fraser, Avho is visiting the Dominion, and also that of his predecessor, Sir Arthur Pearson. Industry, the study of human nature, and the development of the quality of persuasion Avere other attributes necessary for the achievement of success.
