BIG FIRE IN CHRISTCHURCH.

FOUR-STOREYED BLOCK.

A disastrous fire, which occurred in a Hereford St. building in the heart of Christchurch on Tuesday night, shortly before 11 p.m. destroyed most of the four storeys which were occupied by 35 tenants. The fire was brought under control with the greatest difficulty, four engines and 30 firemen being called upon. The building was occupied principally by Chandler and Co., advertising agents, Wjeston Bros., and Co. Ltd, leather merchants, and the Beneol Oil Co. When the alarm was given the top iloor was found t.o be in flames, but the flames spread so rapidly that before long the lower storeys at the back of the building were ablaze.
