The mother of the Empire’s greatest scientist, Airs Janies Rutherford, celebrated her ninetyfirst. birthday at her home at New Plymouth last Sunday.

Captain Henry Taprell Dorling (“Taft’rail”) is voyaging to New Zealand in the cadjets’ training ship Cornwall to give lectures in the Dominion. It is understood that lie is reporting on the work of the Cornwall with a view to the reintroduction of sea-going training of naval cadets.

Following an illness lasting two or three Aveeks, the death occurred on Tuesday of Dr. W. E. Herbert, one of Wellington’s most prominent surgeons and a man of numerous and varied public activities. Dr. Herbert Avas horn at Lawrence, Otago, in 1872, being the son of Air John F. Herbert, a landowner of Tapanui. He was educated at the Boys’ High School, Dunedin, and after a short period at Otago University proceeded to Edinburgh University. He graduated M. 8., Ch.B., there in 1899, and proceeded to the degree of AI.D. in 1902, and also passed a fellowship examination of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. In the Great War, Dr. Herbert served Avith the rank of major, and rendered notable sendee in the NeAV Zealand military hospitals in England. He maintained his interest in the returned soldiers, and Avas the Returned Soldiers’ Association representative on the War Pensions Appeal Boaivl. Dr. Herbert, married Miss Florence Gilmer, daughter of the late Hon. Hamilton Gilmer, who survives him, as do three dau-ghters-'—Mrs Jeffrey Alanning (living in Karachi, India), Mrs Charles Levin, and Miss Betty Herbert.
