WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
ENJOYABLE FUNCTION AT OROUA DOWNS . Last Friday evening a party of ladies from the Dramatic Circle of the Foxton Women’s Institute .journeyed to Oroua Downs hall for the purpose of assisting with the programme in connection with; an open night held under the auspices of the Oroua Downs Women’s Institute to raise funds. A splendid programme, was presented to a very large aim most appreciative audience. The programme commenced with a pianoforte solo by Miss Wright (Foxton) followed by the institute song, “Ode to Friendship,” which was sung by all. An amusing plavottc entitled “Early Birds,’ was well staged by the Oroua Downs Institute, those tubing parf being Mrs Hobbs, Misses D. and L. Davey, D. and N. Sexton, and W. Jarvis. Members of the Dramatic Circle of the Foxton Women’s Institute presented two humorous playettes during the evening and these were received with unstinted appreciation by those present. In the first playette, “The Invitation,” the characters were sustained by Mesdames R. Bync, .J. M. Thomson, F. A. Mason, A. P. Easton, and Misses M. and E. Barber and Wright. The second playette, entitled “Mary’s Dismissal,” was splendidly acted by Mesdames D. R. Barron, R. Robbie and Misses D. Pillar, J. Thvnne, R. Warwick and Wright. All playettes created continued amusement.
At intervals much appreciated items were contributed by Miss J. Colo (Oroua Downs), song, “Wake Up”; Mr. S. J. Harvey (Foxton), monologues; Mr. E. H. Bastion (Foxton), song, “The Curfew”; Miss D. Davey (Himatangi), character sketch, “0 Jisto.”
(During the evening considerable time was spent with community singing under the aible leadership of Mr! ft. F. Smith (Foxton), who 'kept the audience in good humour throughout, Mr. J. Newton (Foxton) ably assisted at the piano.
Mrs Scott (president of the Oroua Downs Institute) officiated as chairwoman and at the conclusion thanked the Foxton performers for their valued assistance. A delicious supper was handed round by the Oroua Downs ladies after which a most enjoyable social time was spent with, dancing which continued until the early hours ol the morning.
