INCREASES IN FREIGHTS AND FARES.

The' rate of increase, totalling a lillion and a half dollars, grunted to the American railways by the Interstate Commerce. Commission,' gives them an operating revenue of 1,134..----000,000 dollars or 241,000,000 more than the* standard allowed by the Government and 84,000,000 more than the- roads made during their best year. The increases in freight, arc ■)'') per cent., passengers' excess l'aggago .md milk 20 per cent.', sleeping berths 20 per cent.
Mr Walker D. Hines, ex-Diroctor-General of Railways, says that the iiicroahc.s will mean a three to fivefold increase in the cost of living and may be kept three-fold by rigid Government action.
