EXECUTIVE MEETING

ARRANGEMENTS WELL IN HANT>. A meeting of the Executive Committee in connection with "Waterlea fortnight," the object of which is to raise money for the development ■of Waterlea Park, was held in the Operatic Society's rooms last evening. Dt It. NobU>Adams occupied

the chair, and the following members were present:—Mrs Fred Redwood, Miss W. Hay, and Messrs L. Griffiths, E. J. Harvey, O. N. Fisk, H. 11. Bagge, R. P. Furness, J. E. Oliver, R, V. Bythell, J. G. Bacon, A. M. Thomson,' C. W. Parker, H. Robson, P. W. Hadfield, W. IX Pike, and N. Parker (secretary). An apology for absence was received from Mr L. C. Bartlett. >

Reporting in behalf of the Ladies' Committee, Miss Hay stated that arrangements regarding "Violet Day" were proceeding satisfactorily. The function would* t;ike place in the Town Hall, where■„ stalls would be erected for the sale of flowers, produce, cakes, etc. There would also be a jumble stall, and afternoon tea would be procurable. An endeavor was being made to secure a shop in which to hold sales of various articles during the fortnight. It was doubtful if. premises could be secured for any but the opening day, in which case the Rotunda in Market Place would be utilised for the balance of the time. The services of Boy Scouts' had been promised ,to one sub-committee for the purpose of delivering parcels of goods. It was decided to ask Mesdames

J. F. Bennett and R. Noble-Adams to organise the supplies* and secure helpers for the cake stall; and Messrs R. V. Bythell and W. W. Tylor were requested to supervise the 'erection of tables in the various stalls and the collection of those required for the afternoon tea department. For the Sports Committee, Mr Bagge reported that, in addition to "the" 'football match which the Rugby Union was arranging, the Opawa and Central Clubs would hold a joint social during the fortnight. The tournament which the Boxing Association had undertaken to run would bo held at a later date, in order . not to clash with another fixture arranged for the first week in August. Mr Robson said that the Hockey Association would hold a seven-a-side tournament on a Wednesday or a Saturday, and if possible a representative match would be played against the Nelson ladies' team, the proceeds of which would bo handed over to the funds. If the latter, match could not be arranged during "Waterlea ■'- Fortnight" .itwould take place a,s soon .afterward/, as possible. t " , Mr , Griffiths was given authority to incur, in behalf of the, Collecting Committee, the expense incidental to the sending out of circulars soliciting donations.

The Collecting Committee was ruthorised to ask the headmasters of the various schools in the district to tak© up collections, in order to afford the children an opportunity of contributing to the funds. Parker. : ' Mr Oliver reported that Mr.XL /\Y. Rose and himself had inspected ,the portion of Waterlea intended to be •used as a sports ground, with a view to grading, part of it so that it could hn "utilised" fpr game* next winter. They recommended that- the best course to pursue was to level about seven acres as a" temporary measure, the permanent work tf> be done in conjunction with the grading of the whole playing area. The seven acres would be sufficient for two playing grounds. Owing to the wet weather, it had not been possible to commence the work so far, but it would be, put in hand as soon as circumstances permitted. The report was adopted. The next meeting was fixed for Friday, July 30.
