A fire and explosion destroyed and sank the steamer Matatua while lying in the docks hero loading cargo for New Zealand.'

The captain was killed. The cause of the fire is unknown

[The Matatua wa« a vessel of about 8000 tons, and was owned by the Shaw, Savill. and Albion Company. She was expected to bring to New Zealand, a largo quantity of news printing paper, and the disaster will nirther accentuate an already serious position for many newspaper proprietors. J
