WAIRAU B. v. WAIRAU A

The four contests between the above teams this season have resulted in a win each and two unsatisfactory draws. Had the wicket been fast on Saturday the game might have resulted in a. draw, but under the circumstances a good win for Wairau B. was the outcome. Pearpoint, J. H. Ward, and Wedde were the notable absentees from Wairau A., the absence of the first-named making a .considerable difference in the attack. Wairau B. batted first, and when they had made only 103, the Wairau A. position did not seem at all in doubt. Chisholmi and Reed opened to the bowling of Twomey and Tylor, and the scoring was very slow, 15 overs being bowled for 21 runs, when Chisholm, who had made 6, cocked one up to Hylton at mid-on. Three runs later Reed retired after making 16, and afterwards wickets fell at fairly frequent intervals. Esson drove haa-d for 21, and Martin showed consummate skill and grace in compiling 26, his square-cutting producing most runs, but one lovely hit, a. hook, reached the boundary. He was missed, in the long-field twice, once.by Mills and once,by Tylor._.During his short stay at the wickets Frank Ward made his presence felt by banging Horton for four and then for six j but he did not get any further chance of increasing his score, as the innings then closed. The Wairau A. opening was fraught with disaster. The second ball from Ross scattered Horton's stumps, while Mills added only one. Jackson contributed 27—haif the score of the whole team—and executed some crisp strokes. Twomey seemed likely to "do things,"'but he was dismissed by a beautiful catch by Wiffen on the edge of the field. Hylton showed great fa-eedom in making 11, but none of the other batsmeci showed anyform. ,

The match practically won, and. the wicket drying, Wairau B. commenced their second innings, Reid (18) and Reed (16) putting on 38 for the first wicket, when both they and Martin were dismissed without any addition to the score. Chisholm and Esson became associated, and while the former played his customary patient innings, the latter's innings may be classed only as pyrotechnic. So hard was he smiting and driving that the bowling was made to look simple, and the. score rapidly mounted up. The next wicket—Chisholm's—fell at 116, when Ward succeeded his skipper, who had scored 6 foursi out of 29 runs. Ward scored 7j and then withdrew in favor of Ross, who, with Esson, played out time. Esson showed great hitting ability, scoring 5 sixes and 5 fours out of 74 runs. Some of his hitting was the loftiest seen on the ground for many a day, while his driving was exceedingly powerful.
