SATURDAY'S PLAY.

WAIRAU B. IN THE LEAD

On Saturday cricketers were furnished with a spirited revival of the "assorted samples" of weather that were served up last month; but although the sluice-gates of heaven were opened with a vengeance on Friday night, and rain fell in fitful showers on Saturday morning, as the afternoon progressed the weather became fine. It was only to be expected that wickets would be sticky for the first portion of the afternoon, and consequently for a while bowling was a carnival for the men at the crease. But under the garish glare of the sun, accompanied by a fresh nor'wester, the wickets rapidly dried on the surface, and then the bowlers received punishment. Picton, who, it is reported, are again "in low water," forfeited their engagement to Marshlands, hence the only senior game flayed was between wairau A. and Wairau 8., the latter combination scoring a victory which puts them ahead for the championship. Wairau A. are two points behind, while Marshlands are one point behind Wairau A. The chance of Wairau B. being the club champions of the 1911-1912 season is now'&Tmost assured, unless Picton upset their calculations aiext Saturday..

Onamalutu inflicted a sound defeat on Wairau in the Junior Cup competition, a result which puts Marshlands in the lead.
