The demonstration at the Park in connection with the opening of the first section of the railway was a great success. Congratulatory speeches were made-at the largest gathering ever held in the dbtrict. Heavy showers set in as the last of the excursionists returned to town. The night is miserably wet, but great crowds of people are in the streets, and the town is.more brilliantly illuminated than on any previous occasion. In the decorations are many designs, expressive of sympathy with the King. Palmerston N., June 26.

The annual meeting of the New Zealand Alliauce was continued here to-day. The balance-sheet showed an income from subscriptions of £1011 2s 10d,«proceeds of meetings £769 7s 7d, sales of literature £68 103 sd, total £1849 0s lOd. The expenditure amounted to £2069 19s 7d. The election of officers resulted:—President, Mr A. S. Adams ; Messrs A. R. Atkinson, M.H.R., and Hoby, the Alliance's representatives on the Executive. A resolution was passed expressing regret at the death of the Revs. Wills and Woodward, and Messrs George Grant and H. C. M. Watson. On the motion of Mr T. J. Bull, Auckland, it was resolved that this Convention expresses its conviction that the liquor difficulty in the King Country cannot be satisfactorily dealt with until clause 33 of the Licensing Act of 1895 be made applicable to that area, and again prefers its request to the Government that this clause be so applied.
