9 ■ BISHOP JULIUS ON EDUCATION. [UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.! CnwsTCHUBCH, October 14. The annual session of the Diocesan Synod opened to-day. Bishop Julius m his address expressed regret at the ilness of the Bishop of Nelson, suggesting that a : message of sympathy should be sent. He stated that the total Parochial debts has been reduced by £3000. He congratulated the Diocese of Dunedin on the foundation of the Selwjn College. Referring to education he said he entiroly approved of the Elementary System of the colony m so far as it was free and compulsory, and if it wore ( only undenominational instead of secular : he could support it with all his heart. He I would be ready to join with other denomina- I tions m obtaining such a system aa that i followed by the London School Board.
