It is stated that a writ of certiorari will be taken out by which married women who were granted licenses at the annual meeting of the Licensing Committee and Licensing Bench will be called on to show cause why the certificate should not be quashed. Wellington, July 3. The City Council met to-day to consider a resolution carried at a public meeting of ratepayers on Friday night, as follows : — " That m the opinion of this meeting the provisions of the Wellington Corporation Leasehold Drainage and Financial Bill, now under consideration m the House of Representatives, are calculated to inflict great fifl&ncial loss upon the city, and the City Council are hereby requested to withdraw it from Parliament." After discussion m committee, it was decided to withdraw the bill and further recommend "that m the opinion of this committee the resolution passed at the meeting, is tantamount to a vote of want of confidence m the" Council, and that it is the duty of the members to resign." This resolution was also adopted. The committee decided to hold a formal meeting on Thursday for the purpose of placing the matter formally before the City Council. July 4. Owing to tho indisposition of Captain Wheeler, of the Wakatipu, Captain Meades, master of the Wanaka, took charge of the former vessel, which sailed for southern ports last evening. Mr Sheppard, formerly chief officer of the Wakatipu, sailed for northern ports m charge of the Wanaka. WooDViiiLE, July 4. Coal has been found m the vicinity of the copper deposits. .■■ A fine meeting-house, at the Maori pah at Ngawaparua, was burnt down last night. It is not known how the fire occurred.
