BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Blenheim Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor and all the councillors being present. The following tenders were opened for forming and metalling Sutherland Terrace : — W. Donoghue 9s 4d, A. McColl Bs, W. Bassett 6s. ' For metalling Sntherland Terrace: — A. McColl 15a. For forming Stuart-street :— J. Carroll 12s Cd, Sutherley and Morgan 9s 6d, A. McColl 8s 6d, O'Donoghue 7s lid, E. Slattery 7s Cd, C. Patchett 7s 3d, B. Patchett 6s 9d, W. Bassett 5s 9d, O. Brenchley 5s 6d. For forming Eeiss-street :— Sutherley and Morgan 9s 6d, P. For all these works :— W. Johnson £74 15s 6d, W. Tindill £59 19s, E. Bythell £63. The tenders accepted were as follows: — Forming Sutherland Terrace, W. Bassett, 6s per chain ; metalling Sutherland Terrace, A. McColl, 158 per chain ; forming Stuart street, G. Brenchley, 5s 6d ; for forming Eeiss-street, W. Bassett, 5s 8d; for the whole of the kerbing, W. Tindill, £59 19s. The Mayor stated that there was a letter amongst the correspondence of a very objectionable character, reflecting on a councillor, and he would not allow it to be read before the Council, though it lay on the table for members to see if they so desired. The Inspector of Nuisances enclosed letters from Messrs Hustwick and Litobfield, on the subject of an alleged nuisance, and reported that no nuisance existed. Cr Sinclair asked if the Inspector alluded to the parties? (Laughter.) The Inspector of Nuisances complained of a nuisance on the property of Mr. John Miller. The usual notice was directed to bf> served. The Inspector of Works reported that Nelson-street East required metalling. It was resolved that the Inspector of Work? be authorised to hare the work done. Cr Litchfield moved that tenders be called for raising Maxwell Boad from 'the Masonic Hotel to Lummas' shop, and Charles-street, from Riley's stables to the Maxwell Boad. Cr Rogers seconded the motion. Cr Robinson intimated he would oppose it Cr Houldsworth pointed out that therond would not be raised as high as tbe footpath, so. that the water would have no lees facilities for flowing off than at present. There could be no two opinions about the usefulness of the work. A division was taken, the «yes being four — Crs Honldsworth.Riley, Litohfield.and Rogers. Noes six— tbe Mayor, and Crs Robinson, Sinclair, Fell, Parker, and Wemyss, The motion was accordingly declared lost. Cr-LUchfieid moved that the culveit at the

junction of Whitney- street and Maxwell Road be extended to the full width of the street. Cr Bogers seconded the motion, which was owned. Cr Fell asked leave to move without notice that Mr Sinclair he requested to move the old porch of the Wesleyan Chapel, at the corner of Alfred and Sinclair-street, within one month. Leave being granted, the motion was seconded and carried. --. Cr Sinclair asked leav&,to move without notice that the Inspector of Works have the Maxwell Road metalled, ' from the bridge to Mrs Chuok's. Leave was granted, and the motion carried Cr Sinclair directed attention to the facL that though the Council had resolved that Hawkeshaw-stieet and Walter-street shou' I be metalled, the work was not being proceeded with. The Mayor said that these works were being 1 left m abeyance till the weather was better. It was resolved that tenders for metalling these two streets be called for next meeting. TH'e accounts passed for payment were :— H. C. O'Leary £7 4s, Crook £10 Ba, P. Mahon £9 2s 6d, Patchett £15 15s. The Council then resolved itself into Committee to consider Mr Hatchesot's letter re the proposed Blenheim Gas Works. On the' Council resnmiog the Committee reported as follows : ". That Mr Oliver be informed that as the Conncil has entered into an arrangement with Mr Hufccheson for the supply of gas they cannot grant his request." " That the Town Clerk and Mayor consult MrConolly as to the deed, fairly representing | the agreement between Mr Hutcheson and the Conncil." The report was adopted and directed to be acted upon. The Conncil then adjourned till Tuesday next.
