AWATERE ROAD BOARD.
The above Board met tbis morning. Present .— Messrt Stace (chairman), Green and Mowat. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Green that the three retiring members of the Board be re-elected. Mr Green moved that Mr Munro be Chairman for the ensuing year, believing m a change m all these matters though he had no fault to find with their late Chairman. Mr Stace seconded the motion which was carried. The following letter wan received from Messrs Furness and Baundy :— ExFßEsi Office, Blenheim, May 3rd, 1881. The Chairman, Awatere Road Board- Sir, — We beg to direct your attention to the fact that at the meeting of the Awatere Road Beard held on February 2nd, a resolution was recorded to the effect that no printing should be executed unless tendered for. We understand that on April 25th some printing was executed, for which no tenders were called, and which could have been performed at a far cheaper rate, had the directions of the Board been complied with. In justice to ourselves, and to the public represented by the Awatere Boad Board, we have deemed it our duty to make these facts known. — We are. etc., FURNESS AND BOONDT. The Secretary piesumed that Furness and Boundy referred to some printed slips of the election advertisement which had appeared m the "Times," which he had direoted that paper to strike off for him for distribution amongst members. It would have been an absurdity to have called for tenders for such a piece of work. With respect to the Board's instructions to call for tenders for printing, he understood that it was that tenders should only be called when the Board's stock of rate forms, printed forms, etc., of which they had a goodly supply, ran out. Mr Terry having explained that Furnens and Boundy referred to certain contract and specification forms, Mr Griffiths stated that the work had been done m an emergency, being wanted m a desperate hurry, and he had requested the " Times " to print them at once. Mr Green, to meet any such difficulty m the future, moved that tenders be invited for the Board s printing op to January 30th, 1882. The moton was seconded and carried. A fortnight's extra time was granted Mr Mr James Charming, on account of illness, for his road contract, on the Taylor Pass Boad. A letter was received from Mr A. Ward, re his position with regard to the Board, and claiming to be the Board's sole Surveyor. It was resolved that he be written to, and referred to the Board's resolution on the subject, passed m October last year. A letter was received the executors of the late A. Barclay, concerning the Awatere ferry boat. The Secretary was instructed to write to the executors, informing them that m consequence of the loss of the boat the Board did not see its way to grant the request of the executors of the estate of the late A. Barclay. A letter was received lrom Mr A. Dillon, complaining of the state of the pound. The pound not being the property of the Board it was resolved to inform Mr Dillon that the Board could not repair it. The Secretary was instructed to ascertain from the Crown Lands office the right of road line through the Cape Campbell district. The following vouchers were passed for payment :— Charles Corder L 4 Bs, J. Muncaster L 4 Bs, Earll and McKeozie L 3; D Henderson L 8 11s lOd, T. Neville LSO, Sharp and Pickering LI 9s, H. Ellis Lls 6a 3d, A. J. C. Ward L 9 7s 6d, G. Robinson L2 l6a Gs, Returning Officer L 2 2s. It was resolved that tenders be calle.i for surveying the line of road from the Jordan Ford to a point opposite the upper boundary of the Awatere Shearing Keserre, being a distance of about five miles. The work to be performed to meet the requirements of the Awatere Shearing Reserve Act. The tenders to be called for next meeting.
