PICTON LITERARY INSTITUTE.

The annual meeting of the above institution was held on Saturday evening last. A. P. Seymour Esq, President m the chair. -The mm utes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed, the Secretary presented the following . REPORT. "Since the last annual meeting, the Corn* mittee are glad to say that the Institute has received a fair measure of support considering the unfavorable circumstances that have been m operation. • Some mouths- elapsed after the new committee was elected, before .the xjeriodicals ordered [from England arrived, and the supply of new books ordered from home has not yet arrived. The Committee feel grateful for the indulgence and continued support of the members,' and they hope the new books which will shortly arrive willbe a permanent attraction to the Institute. The building has been painted, and repaired and a path formed from High-street, to the building. . According to a resolution passed at last meeting the lusfcitute has been ■ registered under the " Public Libraries Act 1875." . The Committee are glad to, report that the donations amounting to £38 10s. have enabled them to place the affairs of the Institute oh a satisfactory footing, and beg to thank the donors for their liberality. . ' The balance to credit m the hands ;of the Treasurer amounts to £13 11s lOd. The Committee requests- the members generally to bring tha advantages of the Institute to the notice of their friends so as to increase the number of members, for it must not be forgotten, that with the present moderate fate of subscriptions the Institute can only be successful by having a large number of members. The thanks of the members are due to Mr Johnson for supplying the Marlborough Expeess to the Institute gratuitously, also to Mr Godfrey for bis kind and valuable present of books to the Institute. : The report was adopted together with a balance sheet. . Proposed that a copy of the report be handed to tbe editor of the Press, requesting him to bo so good as to insert the' same m his paper as local news ; also to the Maryborough Express. Carried. ..-.._.. . Proposed by Mr Ronaldson and seconded by Mr Green — That the retiring officers be reelected : — namely, A. P. Seymour Esq, President ; J. C. Chaytor, Esq., Vice- President"; S.
