BOROUGH COUNCIL ELECTION.

To the Edito - of the Marlborough Express. Sir, —There seems to be a diversity of opinion as to the question on which the late election turned. “An Old Resident ” gave his opinion that it “turned upon the question of the borrowing of the thousand pounds to be spent on river protection.” It might be so; but I am not aware that any of the candidates expressed an opinion on that question, except the one who was at the head of the poll. There is one thing, however, we do know, and that is that the rejected candidate had for some time back been letting us all know, by letters in your paper, that he wanted all ratepayers to pay their just proportion of rates ; and this is quite sufficient to account for his being rejected. Consider for a moment the blind selfishness of human nature generally, and consider that three-fourths of the 'ratepayers have not paid a year’s rates that the other fourth has, and what chance was there of the representative of one against three being elected? None. I agree with those whom 1 have heard say that the rejected candidate owed his rejection to his having written those letters. Jut now there seems to be a great want of discussing power in the Council, and the rejected candidate might have been an acquisition. At any rate, he would have been better than two of those who were re-elected, who generally sit dumb, and I don’t think he would have been such a trimmer as the third.—l am, &c., A Ratepayer.
