BOROUGH COUNCIL.

To the Editor of the Marlborough Express. Sir, —In looking over your report last week of the proceedings of the above named distinguished body, I was struck at the beginning with the logic and hauteur of its leading member. A Mr McCallum had dared to send in a “protest” —the idea ! lam quite surprised. Has M‘Galium not been throwing down water for years, &c.—to the member? For myself, I wonder where M ‘Galium got the water; and I wonder if he is to send the water up country again. Where is it to go but down ? Judge Richmond, the other day, thought water should go down. This mighty Councillor, having let off a little steam in his expressions of surprise, then proceeds to treat the protest with the contempt which it deserves—“l-move that it be disregarded.” Grand, is it not? sublime ! .1 know of nothing that equals it; but “let there be light, and there was light.” . But we can’t say, “ and it was disregarded ;” some one else-had a say in it, or it would have been. It was the same mighty word, moved by the same leading member of Council, which squashed some letter relating to the injustice of the rate account as it at present stands—“ I move that it be disregarded ;” and it was so that time. I can only conceive of one improvement after the protest, and that is that this mighty • member should settle the contractors’ accounts in like manner. According to his conceptions, the Council can “ disregard ” justice, and “ disregard ” protests, and why should it not “disregard” paltry claims for money ? f Don’t you see ,that, Councillors have only to let this member move his “disregard” motion when the bills come in for payment, and support him in it, and they are all forthwith settled to the satisfaction of yours, &c., Another , Graball , September 15, 1870. ~ f, v i
