Waharoa.
Personal. Mr. and Mrs. G. Chapman, of Wairoa, Tauranga, . who have been the guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Ayers, have returned home. Mr. J. F. Ford, first assistant of the cheese factory staff, has been promoted to be manager of the N.Z.C.D.C. factory at Orini, and leaves to-morrow to take up his new duties. Mr. W. W. Farley is spending his annual leave in Auckland .
Miss E. Chapman, who has been the guest of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Ayers, has returned to Omokoroa.
Card Evening.
There was a good attendance at the last 500 evening organised by the Cycle Club, and the winners were Mrs. Schuler and Mr. E. C. Hill. The consolation prizes were won by Miss B. Cresswell and Mr. E. Nowell. Card Evening. The local Cycle Club’s weekly 500 card tourney on Monday evening resulted in the prizes being won by Mrs. J. W. Portland and Mr. Jos. Orr. The consolation prizes went to Mrs.. R. McLachlan and Mr. J. W. Portlahd. Basketball Match. Much interest was ' centred on Thursday afternoon in a challenge match between -.teams representing the married and single ladies. A very keen contest resulted in the married ladies (challengers) being defeated by one goal. The score was 13 goals to 12.
Dangerous Practice.
The prompt action of a man who Tyas standing on the platform of the railway station on Thursday afternoon undoubtedly avoided a tragedy. The south-bound express had almost reached the station and was travelling at a considerable speed, when two young children attempted to climb to the platform after crossing the rails. The party referred to snatched the youngsters clear just as the train rushed past. The spot is used by many pedestrians,- and the incident goes to show how dangerous the practice of crossing lines is. Personal. Mrs. D. R. Gunn, president of the* Waharoa branch "of the Women’s Institute, is visiting Christchurch, where she will represent the branch at the ‘ annual conference of institutes.
Mrs. O. L. Lasenby returned during the week after a short holiday spent in Auckland. Mr. F. Wright, who met with an accident; on his farm a month ago, is still a patient at a private hospital in Matamata. He is making good progress.
