Tirau.
Tirau Public Library. A public meeting was held in the Tirau Hall last week in connection with the Public Library, the first to j take place since 1920. Mr. F. Rose J was in the chair. The library is | controlled by a committee of five ladies, and this meeting was called by them with the object of stirring up fresh interest and increasing the membership of the concern. The secretary (Mrs. Stewart) presented her report, and announced that since 1930 no Government subsidy had been received and the library has had to be self-supporting. The funds last year were augmented by a generous subscription from Mr. Webster, and also by the proceeds of a dance organised by the library committee.
New books have been added at the rate of 50 or 60 annually—mostly fiction—and the library now contains a good collection of new books and old favourites.
Tirau Public Library has been in existence nearly 40 years, and has certainly filled a great want of the reading public for that time. The withdrawal of the Government subsidy is a serious handicap against keeping up the supply of new books, and the committee is making every effort to enrol new members and so increase the annual income.
The committee passed a vote of thanks to Mr. Little for auditing the accounts every year, and also to Mr. Rose for free use of the library building. The retiring committee, Mesdames Jordan, Harvey, Keane, Withers and Stewart, were unanimously reappointed, and the following new members were added, Mesdames Bear, Wilson, Rose and Davis. Mrs. Bear was elected chairwoman and Mrs. Davis treasurer, Mrs. -Stewart as secretary and Mrs. Marshall as librarian being reappointed. Before the close of the meeting, the chairman made several recommendations for arousing added interest in the library and increasing its income.
Bible Class Social.
A combined social of the Matamata, Putaruru and Tirau branches of the Presbyterian Bible Class was held in the Tirau Town Hall last week. The attendance was good and a most enthusiastic and enjoyable function ensued. Round games occupied the first part of the programme, after which an interesting address was given by Mr. Houston, of Matamata, in the unavoidable absence of Rev. A. C. Hampton. Tirau members were responsible for serving supper, which was followed by community singing led by Mr. Ken. Grover, with Mr. Houston, junr., acting as pianist.
Personal.
Mr. B. Syme, formerly of Tirau, is a patient at the Waikato Hospital where he is making good progress following an operation. Miss S. Syme is the guest of Mrs. B. Syme at Peria, Matamata. Mr. W. Withers has bought Mr. Burke’s property at Tapapa, and with Mrs. Withers and family will be leaving Tirau at the end of the week to reside there. Mr. A. J. Beck returned to Tirau last week-end after attending the county clerk’s conference.
