Girl Guides

BIRTHDAY PARTY. A very happy evening was spent in Bt. Andrew's Hall on Friday in nonour ox the seventh anniversary of the birthday of the Matamata Girl Guides and Brownies. Tea was served at 5.30 p.m. on tables gaily decorated by Mrs. J. W. Burley. The large birthuay cake, made and decorated by Mrs. J. W. Simpson, was cut by the president of tne tiirl Guides’ Committee, Mrs. A. Thirlwall. At the conclusion of tea, Mrs. Burley, Brown Owl and vice-president, aiter wishing the Guides and Brownies very many happy returns of the day, took the opportunity of introducing to them their new Captain (Mrs. S. Stockdale), who is taking on the good work on the retirement of Miss W. Helmsley. On behalf of the committee, Mrs. Burley then presented to the Guides a cabinet in which to keep the cup won by them for district competition in athletics in 1933. Time was spent in organised games and songs, which were enjoyed by all. Before supper was served Mrs. Burley, in an appropriate speech, thanked Miss Helmsley for her valuable work and time given to the Guides in the past, and wished her every happiness in the future. One of the senior Guides then presented her former Captain, whose marriage takes place in the near future, with a small token of esteem and appreciation for her untiring services. Miss Helsmley suitably responded, and was accorded musical honours. Supper was served and a happy evening was concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.
