CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting 1 of the council of the Matamata Chamber of Commerce was held in the Record office on Wednesday, when the following members were present:— Messrs. B. C. Taylor (president), L. Flower,' W. Halligan, J. Keeley, G. G. Beil, A. E. Wrigley, R. W. Stevens and H, E. Schofield (secretary). Mr. 0. Heerdegen, late secretary of the Pukekohe Chamber, was also, present, by invitation. Calendar Reform. The secretary gave a resume of. the proposal to reform the calendar which was now being considered by a committee of the League of Nations. He stated the idea was to split the year up into 13 equal months of 28 days. The name of the extra month was suggested as Sol, and it would fall in between June and July. The extra necessary day, to be called Peace Sunday, would fall after December .28, while Leap Day would fall on, June 29 every fourth year. The simplification of the calendar should appeal to all, and one advantage was that there would be no confusion in regard to dates as each day of the week would have the same date each month. In reply to questions, Mr. Schofield stated Christmas Day would always fall on a Monday #nd Easter Sunday would be a fixed date—April 15. Members agreed that simplification of the calendar would be a wise move and that the present suggestion offered the best solution. Land Settlement. Mr. Schofield stated that he had interviewed Mr. Stallworthy in regard to land settlement with successful results. Mr. Stevens held that Mr. Forbes had missed the point in his letter. The president stated that he hoped it would not get abroad that the Chamber was acting as land agents. It was-not; the sole idea was to ensure that more settlers came into the district. Mr. Schofield stated that he expected word from the Government (Continued in Next Column)

with regard to a local subdivision this week. Meetings. The chairman remarked that it Had been suggested to make the monthly meetings open to all members. If there was any desire for it he felt that it should be granted. He moved in that direction. Mr. Bell stated he had great pleasure in seconding the motion. Mr. Griffiths asked if members would have a vote. Mr. Bell stated the motion should be altered to read that a general meeting of the Chamber be held monthly. ' This wording was then agreed to.
