PROPOSED BATHS.

DISCUSSION BY CHAMBER. Committee Set Up. Several letters were read at Wednesday’s meeting of the Matamata Chamber of Commerce giving information in regard to the cost of swimming baths. These estimates ranged from £2OOO in the case of Morrinsville down to under £4OO. Mr. Taylor pointed, out that the figures in regard to Morrinsville included the cost of the land and buildings. All that, they were-con-cerned about at the moment was the concrete work. If the baths were erected on school property a £ for £ subsidy would be obtained, which would ease matters. Mr. Stevens thought it advisable to go for town baths. There were too many restrictions on the public in the case of school baths. Mr. G. G. Bell pointed out that school baths worked very well in Christchurch. The Domain, he thought, would be an ideal site. Mr. Wrigley stated he had worked out the cost roughly and put the concrete work at about £260 and the excavation at about £l4O. Mr. Bell stated that Mr. Wilson had suggested putting the baths in the 'Domain and raising the concrete 3 feet above the level. Spoil could then be carted around the sides. He thought the suggestion a good one, and should solve the question of drainage. Mr. Griffiths said that in the Domain the baths would be subject to irksome restrictions if carnivals were held. He thought the Town Board foreman had taken levels on the Domain and advised the Town Board that pumping would be necessary. Mr. Bell then pointed out that the pit (near the club) "would make a good site and save excavation work. On the "motion of the chairman, it was decided to set up a sub-commit-tee, consisting of Messrs. Stevens and Flower, to report on the whole question before the annual meeting. It was suggested the committee consult with the Town Board foreman, Mr. Forbes. *
