MATAMATA TOWN BOARD.
81-MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Matamata Town Board on Monday was attended by Messrs. J. Buchanan (chairman), J. H. Hawes, W. J. Stanley, J. Mclntyre, W. S. Ruthe, I. Black and A. Stewart. Also in attendance were Messrs. D. V. Sanders (clerk) and V. B. Forbes (foreman). Hetana Street. Reporting on the proposal to diminish Hetana street, the chairman stated that Mr. Carr had almost completed the survey. It had been found that the original length it was proposed to diminish the street by meant that one end interferred with Mr. Stockdale’s entrance. To overcome this, it was proposed to reduce the length taken in from 336 ft to 300 ft, the 36-ft to be taken from the Broadway end. On the motion of Messrs. Buchanan and Hawes, a special order diminishing the street by 100 yards by 33ft was then agreed to unanimously. Beautifying Funds. The president of the Beautifying Society wrote stating that a recent dance in aid of funds for beautifying purposes had not been well patronised. He asked for a remission of the' hall rent.—Granted. Power Poles. The Thames Valley Power Board advised that it had decided, under powers vested in the board, to erect a power line across the cemetery and fourteen days’ notice of this intention was given. The chairman stated that a special committee had met Power Board officials and little objection was offered to the Town Board’s proposal to deviate. This letter came in the ‘nature of a surprise. The Power Board had power to erect lines across private property, but they had got to prove that a cemetery was private property... However, it appeared from the plan that no poles were to be placed in the cemetery. The board then agreed to the power line being taken across. the cemetery, the clerk to note that no poles were erected within the cemetery area. The Domain, The chairman reported having discussed the improvement of the domain ground with cricketers and suggested that an area be top-dressed. Mr. Mclntyre thought that topdressing would not get rid of : the rough grass which had taken possession of the ground, and advocated ploughing the area up. During the discussion, however, it was pointed out that ploughing would cost about £5 per acre, which would mean an outlay of about £SO. The board then decided to topdress a portion of the ground around the cricket pitch as an experiment.
