I Accounts totalling £15,097 Is 'Bd I were passed for payment by the Matamata County Council at the March meeting. The rain which fell on Monday last proved very welcome to local farmers, the most of whom had top-dress-ed paddocks to which they could not move their stock.. A number of men arrived in Putaruru on Friday to start work in the afforestation industry. It is understood that two new camps have been established. A contract for the construction of a new length of road to open up Morgan’s block, Peria, has been let to Mr. D. McCarthy, of Matamata, by the Matamata County Council. The approximate amount realised at the garden fete held at the Bank of New Zealand grounds on Saturday last in aid of the proposed rest room funds was £2O, proving the very great success of the function. At the close of Monday’s meeting of the Matamata Town Board, the chairman, Mr. J. Buchanan, advised members that at the next meeting the board would have to come to a decision in regard to the future use of the town hall for pictures. As the Matamata Football Club offered no objection, the Matamata Town Board decided at its last meetr ing to remove the two lights on the domain, which were erected for training purposes, as they interfered with one of the playing areas. The next work for the Matamata County Council’s bitumen gang will be spraying a second coat on the Richmond Downs or 447 main highway and respraying number 19 main highway near Waharoa and Matamata. The thirty-one boys who arrived from England some time ago, and who have been in residence at the Williams Home (Salvation Army), Waotu road, have completed their period of farm training. They left for various parts of the North Island on Tuesday. The Matamata county crushing plant at Omahine, is now closed down. During the season 4800 yards of metal and shingle were taken out of the stream. Some 2555 yards of crushed blue metal and chippings were supplied from this source to Messrs. Bray and Company, Ltd., road contractors. The foreman of the Matamata Town Board reported at" Monday’s meeting that he had laid two test strips on the penetration system in i Peria road. On one strip colfix had , been used, and on the other emol- ( eum. Both mixtures were put down at 1$ gallons to the square yard, and 1 traffic was allowed to go over the < work as soon as completed. ,
