“CURRENT CASH.”

A revival of one of Bland Holt’s plays was given in the Matamata Town Hall on Tuesday when the Putaruru Dramatic Society gave a very fine interpretation of the ..dramatic piece entitled “ Current Cash.” It was unfortunate that the evening was not better advertfsed, for the" patronage was very poor, and the distinguished efforts of the "amateurs forming the cast deserved a far better house. The proceeds of the evening are to be divided between the Putaruru and Matamata High Schools. The story is intensely dramatic, though relieved with a fair amount of comedy, and tells of a captain falsely accused of cowardice on the field of battle, condemned to be shot and robbed of his fortune by his superior officer. The machinations of the villainous major, and the sufferings of the captain’s wife and child follow, until in the final act the captain dramatically re-appears he having been saved from shooting by a surprise attack—and denounces his old comrade-in-arms. Mr. Rolfe, senr., showed great versatility in taking parts of the captain, the love-sick curate and an army pensioner, while Mrs. Rolfe played the part of the dispossessed widow in convincing manner. Mr. Dick Rolfe, as a vagabond ex-soldier, created much humour, while Misses Maida and Edna Rolfe showed conspicuous ability in their respective parts. A great deal of work fell on Mr. Kernahan. who clayed the unpopular role of vifiain in on outstanding manner. The work of the wholo oast was narticnlarlv good, and doubtless many of those nresent would like to see the same comoanv again in another roore modern play.
