Table Tennis

(by “Critic"'!

There was a Large attendance of members at the Garrison Hall on Wednesday night aid besides a number of challenge matches decided, several singles and doubles games were played.

On the Women’s ladder the three top places remain unchanged, while fourth place is now held by M. McInnes as a result of a successful challlenge to B. Dagg whom she defeated 21-9. The former was in third place for a period during the evenin0 * after winning ft to Mrs Keen 21-14 but in the replay the latter regained her place in a good game the result being 21-18. B- Bussell's win to retain the premier position against Mrs Veint 21-9 yvas due mainly to a well placed 6< -rvice which the latter found difficult to return. In all her games the former employs an effective service _ wrural she places well but there is Bull room for improvement in her forehand plav. Apart from being unable to handle her opponent’s service in this game, Mrs -Veint appeared to lose points by over-hitting her forehand shots. Mrs Keen played steadilv to win against B. Dagg 2116. She directed her service to more effect in this game and she should endeavour now to speed it up a little D Sew Hoy, now in sixth place as ’ a result of a win over E. Dagg 9,i-8 was in good form. She. too should place her service more to advantage as her forehand play in this game was Quite steady. E. Da*gg pp* tains her earlie.r promise but she loses points bv over-hitting her forehand shots and in this regard she will be more successful if she steadies un . B. Scott gained eighth place bv a win over M. Mayhew 21-19. The former is improving and. if enthusiasm means anything, she will advance on the ladder. A. McDowall and I. Walters are improving with practice and thev should now endeavour to unprove their positions on the uidcier by entering more challenges. On the men’s ladder the two top places are held as formerly, Jtest pllace being retained by B. McSorilev who disposed of Keen’s challenge. 21-11. but the following .positions to sixth place have been altered to some extent. J. McSorilev now occupies third place, .then follow G. Nelson. B. Pittawav and D. Williams in fourth, fifth ami sixth p'ares, respectively. The defection of Williams to sixth place was a surprise of the evening. In his games during the evening, the forehand of J. McSorilev functioned to some effect and in two close games with Williams he won 25-23 and 21-18. He withstood a strong cha lengefrom G. Kelson, 21-18, but in ft chfthnng'n for second place he lost to Keep, 21-17. Williams seems to have lost the good form he displayed earlier in the season. One of the most promising players in the club jis G. Nelson who won through to fourth, place during the evening. He defeated J. Sadlier 21-17 P. 2110. I>. Hall 21-12. F. Bariev 26-24. D. Williams 21-8 and R. Pittaway 21-U and in a challenge for third place he was narrowly beaten by J. MeSoriley . Nelson, a young plaver. shows every indication of reaching the premier position before the end of the season. Pittaway, too. .is improving with practice gaining fifth place he defeated Williams 21* 16 His forehand and backhand play is steady but he could, perhaps, di- , j-ect htis service to more effect. The match between Bailey and Nelson for seventh, place was the best of the evening. Nelson led in the early stages but the steadiness of Baw enabled him to draw level at 20. Fortunes fluctuated from that point hirst one then the other taking the lead. Bailey appeared to tiro m the concluding stages-, .the match going to Nelson 26-24. L. Heenan won . through to eighth place during the evening bv successes over J. Sadliei 21-16 P. McSor.ilefr 21-10 and D. Hall 22-20. He placed his service well in these games and pllayed steadily. He should endeavour to get more practice as he has the ability to ndvance further on the Ladder. J. SadHer played well in Ms match with G. Nelson.’ the result going in favour of the latter 21-17. The former seemed to lack finish in this game. This could be overcome if he imparted more speed to his service and table play.
