Queenstown Swimmer
Well-known to residents as the elder son of Mr w. Berry, formerly of tins town. ®ta“* sergeant Douglas Berry has been making a name for himself in Egyptian swimming circles. Recently die met the Eyyptian national champion, Zaky Eld in, and was successful in a distance of 100 metres. Later, .the Egyptian proved, victorious in the 100 metres- backstroke. Berry finishing second, but. was disqualified for turniny on to his face too <soidn. Douy. lias now arranyed to train with Alexander FerincafTy. .the Eyyptian coach, until the Cairo championships which : will be bold towards the end of this month. . A former pupil of Queenstown school. Douy. represented Southland in the senior swimminy championships held at Dunedin in 1396. In 1939 he was runner-up in the N.Z. 400 metre backstroke championsh.p It will be remembered that Douy. yave swimminy and diviny demonstrations in Queenstown during the Physical Fitness week held in February 1399.
