Queenstown School Committee

The monthly meeting of the Queenstown School Committee was held on Friday, 30th Auirust, 1917. Present: A. McCallum, (chairman), ,T. H. Tal'entire, A. McDonald and G. P. Burns. An apology for non-attend-ance was received from Mr Mayne. The headmaster's report, gave the. roll number at 10(j, average attendance 131, percentage of attendance B'J°o. He also staled that in upper ciasses Std. 3 —o the attendance has been continuously satisfactory, but there has unfortunately been in Sts. 1 and, 2 and in the. P classes a surprising amount of sickness. However, "it is noticeable that in some cases the 'sick' child is kept, at home during- school hours, but has liberty after sundown to parade the streets and attend socia! functions,,etc., til! ]ato hours. If some parents took a mom intelligent interest in the progress of their children both from the view point of health and of education, the community and the school would be benefited. "The term examinations are being conducted this week and the results are showing a distinct improvement on those of last term. The quarterly cards will be issued this coming week. The committee is aware oT the progress made with the planting operations in the school play grounds and it is hoped that these will be completed this month. The agricultural plots will soon be set out but before this can Ik- done and planting operations begun it will be necessary to have the water system attended to. The fences round the plots also require immediate attention to ensure their being rabbit proof. Thero is plenty of netting in hand for this wurk and it is suggested that the shorter of the two dividing fences <i! the upper play ground be taken down to supply the necessary posts, etc. The committee will recognise that these improvements are urgent in view of the approaching season. A letter was received from the Secretary o r the Southland Education Board notifying that Miss Salmond had been appointed first assistant, and that she would commence duty on 10th September. The matter of netting in school garden, procuring lio-e, and extending water pipe was left in the hands of the chairman and headmaster. Accounts amounting to £2 lis Sd were passed lor payment. Messrs A. Macdonald and G. B. Burns were appointed a visiting committee for the month.
