MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS, The Tientsin correspondent of the “Morning Post” says:—Englishmen in the Far East almost unanimously oppose renewing the Anglo-Japanese Alliance in its present form, fearing it would involve Britain discreditably in Japan’s Eastern policy. They believe that the Alliance prevents a more cordial Anglo-American co-operation in China, which is indispensable for the solution of China’s difficulties. Hie Chinese Press bitterly comments on tho possibility of a renewal of the alliance on existing terms. The Government has offered eleven acres, behind tho British Museum, as a site for London University. Tho property is worth £1,000,000, but tho national finances will not permit. tho Government t'o provide the premises. Seven detectives, three miners, one agitator and the Mayor were killed in a revolver fight at Matewan, West Virginia. Tho trouble arose over the attempted ejection from their homes of striking miners’ families by detectives. Shooting became general, but the situation quietened early in the night.
There were violent -scenes in tho French Chamber during the strike debate, in which M. Daubet. tho Royalist leader, attacked the revolutionary conspiracy of the Socialists. There was an organised babel while M. Daubet was speaking, and as the President was unable to restore order he closed the sitting, amid wild excitement among tho Socialists-
