THE PRESBYTERY.
The Christchurch Presbytery mot yesterday; present—Revs J. O. * atersou (Moderator), R. M. llyburn J. D. Webster, J. Paterson, A. Laishley, W. T. Todd J>- O. Rodger, W. H. Howes (secretary), N. O. White, J. G. Butler \ J). Kirkland and G. Lindsay, and Messrs O. I. Jennings, J. Frame. W II llose, !>• Fawcett, J. Tennent, A. H. Coatcs, W. Robinson (elders), and (J Jaoksori (home missionary). the Rev J~ Watt attended as a visitor. Tho names of the Rev W. Lewis (Oxford) and Mr G. B. Wright (St Peter s) wero added to the roll of the Presbytery. The secretary reported that Mr Lewis was ordained at Oxford. A commission that visited Oxford reported that it had met the office bearers and Mr Lewis, and that the work there was quietly progressive- Mr Lewis was entering as far as he could into every movement in the district oonnested with morality and religion. A finding was sustained congratulating t\w home missionary, office bearers anil people of Oxford on the evident signs of progress, the increased collections, and the establishment of Bible Class' and the condition of the church property. The finding urged office bearers' and congregation to further ' help the homo missionary by prayer and bv teaching the young. The Presbytery placed on record its appreciation of tho services of the Rev A. D. Kirkland after a pastorate oi seven years in tho Waikari charge, and regret at his departure from the Presbvtery's bounds. Mr Jennings said that the Rev W. U. Norton was doing excellent work amongst soldiers a-t Haumer, and that his efforts wero deeply appreciated by both soldiers and residents. A committee appointed in connection with the augmentation of stipends reported that a minimum of £2OO each for Papanui and Riccarton and £225 tor Kaiapoi had been fixed. The committee, however, considered that, in view of information obtained, tho stipend at Papanui should be more than the sum stated. , The Teport was adopted, and it was decided that the position at Papanui should be referred to the managers at Papanui, who should be asked to report to next meeting of the Presbytery. A motion was passed recommending the appointenint of the Rev W. T. Todd, Lyttelton, aB naval chaplain. A report was received on tho proposal of the Riccarton congregation to borrow the sum of £3OO from the Now Century Fund for a manse, the land tor which was given to tho congregation. A motion was passed expressing appreciation of tho generosity of the Rev N. {V. White (pastor) and Mr G. Royds in giving the hind, and tho proposal to borrow was approved. A committee was appointed to examine the plans and specifications of the building.
