(Received October 26, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, October 23,
A conference, convened by the Miners’ Federation, discussed the high cost of living. Speakers Baid that prices had risen from 120 to 128 per cent over pre-war rates since the Profiteering Act came into force, so it was evident the Government’s scheme had failed. Mr Frank Hodges admitted that the workers were in a vicious circle, wages travelling after prices. The present Excess Profits Tax was no solution, but excess profits should be diverted for the purpose of reducing prices. The conference passed a resolution urging the gammoning of a special Trade XJnion Congress to decide upon a policy regarding the cost of living.
