MILITARY SERVICE.
. * No. 1 CANTERBURY BOARD. The First Canterbury Military Service ! Board hold a sitting at Christchurch yesterday; present—Messrs J. S. Evans (chairman), J. D. Millton and H. E. Robbins, and Cap.ain Pilkington (military representative). The appeal of several residents of the Southbridgo district on behalf of William Ludeman, farmer, Lakeside (Mr Nicholls) was dismissed, but tho chairman stated that a recommendation would be made that Ludeman should be put back to the April draft, in order that ho could assist in gathering tho harvest. The Marlborough Timber Company (Mi Wright) appealed on behalf of its manager, Colin A. Campbell, Nydia Bay. Mr Wright stated that the company had omploved' sixty or seventy employees at the outbreak of the war, and of this number fifty-three had gone to the front. This was tho first occasion that the company had appealed on behalf of any of employees. Mr D. W. Reese, managing director, gave evidence in support of the appeal. The case was adjourned sine die. * The fo'lowing caeeg were adjourned:—Till March —Henry Le Comte (Ruru Moana), for whom his father, D. H. Le Comto appealed. Till April—Thomas Henry Gibbs, Darfield. Time was allowed in the following cases: Thomas Edwin Hine, farmer, Springston, till March, John Abraham Merrick, farm hand, Killinchy, for whom Hugh M'Lenaghayt appealed, till March; James David Henderson (Mr Ward), Halkett, till April: Herbert Burton Shipley (Mr Acland), farmer, Aylesbury, till Acril; Thomas . Gough, Gre'endale, till April. An application by A. W. Newton for a. rehearing of the case of Israel Rhodes, mine manager, Reefton, was refused, on the grounds that at the first hearing the reservist had not given ft true statement, of his affairs. Time was allowed until February.
Time was allowed in the case of Benjamin Hayes, Halkett, until March. The following cases were adjourned : Till April—Bruce M'Laehlan, farmer, Dovleston; Ernest George Wright. Dunenndel;. Till March—Harold Archibald Mobbs, farmer, Sheffield. Till April—Peter Francis Clinton, Darfield. The oa=e of James Oddy, Lincoln, was adjourned sine die. The appeal of James Gillick, on behalf of Samuel Smith, miner, Glentunnel. was adjourned for proof as to the reservist's ago. Reservist stated he was forty-six years old. Tho appeal of Patrick Morrison, on behalf of Peter Lee Morrison. Darfield, was automatically adiourned' sine die, tho reservist having been classed C2. Ernest Akerman Smith (Mr Ouningham), farmer, Lincoln, was granted time until April.
