BREACHES OF AWARDS.
MAGISTERIAL PROCEEDINGS. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr T. A. Ji. Baney, S.M., tiiInspector of Awards (Mr J- Jackson) proceeded against the Now Zeaiiuid Uiue Company (Mr Gressoh) for a breach of the engine-drivers' award for employing Duncan M'ltae and paying him only 2.-. 6d an hour for Sunday work instead of 3s; and also for paying only Is 6d an hour for work done oh Easter Monday and 2s. 6d for work done on Good Friday, instead of time and a half and double time respectively Second and third charges were brought in respect of the employment of J. Smithers and B. Kerr. A charge of accepting the lower rates was also pieferred against J. Smithers. The principal point at issue was whether the employer, who i was paying Is (xl an hour instead ,of Is 3d as fixed by. the award, was obliged to pay double time "according to the award or double time on the actual wage being received.
The Magistrate held that double time and time and a half should be computed on thv> actual wages. A penalty of os and costs was allowed in each case against the company, and 2s against Smithers, with costs. "The Inspector also proceeded against [jy. .'Mapstone, driver, for a breach of .'••he .Canterbury drivers' award." 'in that -during May, 1918, while,* employed iu the service of" S. Wilson, Contractor, he had failed to ;Hve a week's noiice of resignation. A fine of £1 with 6s costs was imposed
