MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

CHRISTOHTJRCH. Mr T: "A. B. Bailey, S.M., presided dt the Magistrate's Court yesterday. For entering licensed premises during the currency of a prohibition order, John Webster was fined '2os and costs. Robert M'Donald was charged en two informations with failing to register his dogs. A fine of 10s and costs was imposed on each charge. Herbert Henry Cook (Mr Johnston) was proceeded against by the Heathcote County .-Council for making . an alteration to a house without notifying the council, failing to comply with a notice to connect with the sewer, constructing a septic tank without permission of the council, and making an alteration to a house without paying the fee to the council. Mr Acland appeared for tho council. Defendant was fined 20s and costs on the first charge, and was ordered to pay costs on the •second. On the third couiifc he was convicted and discharged, and the fourth charge was withdrawn. Alexander Boyle was charged with shooting Californian quail without a license. Mr Gresson appeared for the Acclimatisation Society. Tho defendant pleaded not guilty. Mr Gresson said that the defendant, in company with two other men. was shooting quail on a farm at Halswell. They were met by the society's ranger, who asked to see their licenses. One of the men was the owner of the place, so he did not need a license, the other man had a license, but the defendant did not. Mr Gresson said that it was not a case of a person committing an offence in ignorance, but it was the ?ase of a person who knew the regulations, but neglected to take out a license. Further, it was a serious offence to shoot imported game. _ He would therefore ask that the maximum penalty should be inflicted. Defendant: T admit the offence, but it was pure forgotfulness on my part, that I did not take out a> license. Mr Grpsson: If the defendant puts up that defence I must state that his -forgetful-' ness has existed for five rears or so. Defendant: I object to tlr's evidence. The Magistrate: Fined 40s and costs. LYTTELTON, Mr. F. Knight, J.P., presided at'the Lyttelton Magistrate's Court dayEllen Amelia Lang, charged with the theft at Cbristehurch the previous day of £l, the property of E. J. King, was remanded to appear at Christchurch on Wednesday next.
