COAL STRIKE.

In the Assembly, Mr Hall introduced a Bill to curtail the supply of gas and electric power, to pass all stages at one sitting. The Opposition began a stonewall. After two hours closure was applied and the Bill was proceeded with. Mr Hall stated that about 1600 factories and 20,000 workers would be affected by the passing of the Bill, and it would mean that after Friday all theatres and picture shows depending on municipal supplies would close. It proposed to cut off the gas supply from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. dally. The Walsh Island Engineering Works will close on Tuesday, throwing idle 19,000 men. The Government lias requisitioned all coal held in breweries. A meeting of the Miners’ Delegate Board at Wollongong carried a motion for'a general cessation of work in all allied trades in order to terminate the strike. THE BILL PASSED. (Received November 17, 9.35 p.m.) SYDNEY, November 17. The Gas and Electric Lighting Restriction Bill passed both Houses. TRIAL OPERATION. ACT COMES INTO FORCE ON SUNDAY. (Received! November 17, 9.40 p.m.) SYDNEY, November 17. The new lighting Act operated for a short time to-day when candles were requisitioned for interior lighting, but a meeting of the newly-appointed Light and Power Board decided to give the city twenty-four hoars’ grace. It is now proposed to cut off all power at midnight on Sunday, and private lighting, including theatres and private houses, at midnight on Monday. The penalty for contravention of the order is £SOO. / -
