OXFORD PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the Oxford Patriotic Committee was held on Monday night, when Mr D. Hawke presided over a large at-' tendance. y'i 'XL /V'YUiX/X- ---" It was decided to send of sympathy to the parents of Captain Gorton and Private Lawson, both of whom had been wounded, and to congratulate Captain Gorton on his promotion in rank. * A discussion took place on tho question of settlement of returned soldiers on the land. It was . considered that it was not creditable that the price of land should be prohibitive, and that it should be necessary that in order to secure land Canterbury !nen should bo compeUed to go to the North Island, where the conditions might be suoh as the men had not been accustomed to. It was suggested, that after observing tho intensive farming on small areas in France the returned _ men might be able to teach a good deal in regard to the economio and productive use of land, and many of them might be prepared tc farm small areas on the French system. It was decided that the Land Purchase Board should be urged to acquire land suitable for returned soldiers. • " '" '
A discussion . took place on the qucst-'c: of enemy aliens ana it was unanimous "v resolved that the Government be urged n intern all alien enemies in the Dominion directly or indirectly in the pay of tho enemy Governments, and that they s hou'cl be maintained at their own expense.
