MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.

A well-attended social. gathering . was held in the Papanui Presbyterian Sunday Schc-el Hali on Thursday evening, under - the auspices of the Young Women’s Bible Class, for the purpose of raisin j? funds to send gifts to the men who have gone from the church to the front. The Rev D. Rodger read extracts from letters received from four soldiers. The programme consisted of musical items and recitations. The collection amounted to £5 10s.

A' -progressive euohre match was held in the Papanui Social Hall on Thursday evening. Mr J. -R„ M’Gullough presided over one of the largest and most enthusiastic gatherings ever held.in the cluhroom. Tlio winners were Mesdames E. Wells and Frost and Messrs J. Aitchison and G. Borgfeldt. During the evening songs tvere given by •Miss Wells and Messrs j. Ait-cilnson. Weils and E. Smith.

At the weoklv meeting of the ,- Avonside Nursing Division of the St John Ambulance Brigade there was an attendance of fortyone. Members had practice in roller bandaging, after which Dr Jennings lectured on “ Observation of the Sick,” Bnd also epoko about tbe nurse’s treatment of a patient recovering from a serious illness and ■ tbe precautions necessary. The speaker was accorded a vote of thanks.
