SPORTING.

NEWS AND NOTES. Free (W. Scobie). with Daylight Bill as a schoolmaster, was tried over two of the pony hurdles at Riccarton yesterday. For a novice she shaped fairly >ve!l," and she should be worth a decent trial over the obstacles. Calier Davon (W. Scobie) jumped five hurdles yesterday. His effort was only moderate, as he ran down the obstacles badly, but he, has done no work yet, which may have accounted for the unattractive display. Glenowl (D. M'Kay), after, clearing the two pony hurdles, was tried over the bigger obstacles up the back, He ran off at the second, but on being taken back cleared both of them nicely.

Encore, who has been on the easy list for s'ome weeks, has been taken up again by A. M'Aulay, and is being hacked about, preparatory to going into work.

, The Easter meeting of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club will be commenced this season on Easter Saturday,. April 22,. and concluded on the following Wednesday. These should be much more suitable dates than thoso of last year, when a start was made on the day before Good Friday, with Easter Saturday for the wind up. Ogier came *on with the racing he had at Wingatui last week, and he may credit his owner with a decent stake before the close of the season.

It is reported from the south that the stallion General Average, by Hotchkiss—Crecy, escaped from his box cently, and whlie chasing another horse got into a wire fence, injuring himself so seriously that he had to be destroyed. General Average did not get many chances at the stud in Central Otagb. but he sired at least two useful performers, Golden Rupee and Copper Boy. The two-year-old colt, Don Pacifico, has shown a decided liking for the Wingatui course. He made his first trip south in October, when he ran third to Thestius and Koesian in the Dominion Handicap. He returned at Christmas, when he won the Dunedin Handicap and was second to Kilboyne in the Juvenile Handicap. Last weekhe kept up his record for consistency, as he 10-t the City Handicap by a head to Wardancer. and won the Hopeful Handicap on the last day. Don Pacifico is by San Francisco from Brave Heart, who is a sister to Fleetfoot, so that the colt is ft brother in blood to First Flight and Flying Start. The veteran gelding North Atlantic died recently at the Hon J. D. ■ Oiv mond's Woodville station, where he had been on pension for some time. North Atlantic was by Nordenfeldt from the imported mare Atlantic, so that he was a half-brother to St Lfeger, Happy Land and Fabulous. He was a smart two-year-old and he raced on with considerablo success, the Napier Cup and Gieat Autumn Handicap being among the races credited to him as a five-year-old.

A friendlv match was decided in Hawke's Bay recently to decide the respective merits of Kirkby (Birkenhead Ghtdiola) .and Sandglass (San trail— Secret. Girkby won and his owner became the owner of Sandglass It is doubtful, however, if lie will do much good with either horse. , Darin<nklo provided striking evidence at the Duncdin Jockey Club s autumn meeting of how much improvement a horse will occasionally make in a tew weeks. Ho failed in moderate company each day of the Southland Racing Club's New Year fixture, while about three weeks later he was beaten at Wairio. So far as Invercargill was concerned, the bad state of the going may have been against him, but he did not appear to bo treated with undue leniency in getting off with the minimum in the Stewards' Welter Handicap on the first day at Win'gatui. His immediate connections are understood to have fancied his chance, but he was not in favour with the public, and he paid a good dividend when he won. On the second day, in the Suburban Welter Handicap, he was lb*ll> above the minimum;, and he returned another good price. Rxiised stijl further in the Abbotsford Welter Handicap on Saturday, till he was conceding H2lb to those at the bottom of the list, he just missed second place. There was nothing in his previous form to suggest that he was sncii a good horse a* he has undoubtedly proved himself, though Southland sports men have for some time past heralded him as likely to turn out well. Having shown that he can get to the end of a mile so well, there seems no reason why he should not distinguish himself further over even longer courses Daringdale is by the Souft Hotcherina horse Canrobert, who has left a number of useful horses in the south, though nothing in the front rank up to the present. Such a good representative as Daringdale, however, should bring him into greater prominence, and he. may yet take a leading place as a sire. The Yatterina family, from which descends, has earned considerable distinction in New Zealand, and though it has done best through the female line, it has provided a few useful sires. St Bridget, the dam of Daringdale, was bred

by the Hon J. D. Otinond J being by St Andrew (brother to Clanranald) from Martvr, bv Daniel O'Eourke—Raupo, and 'so back to Flora M'lvor, whose name figures in many leading pedigrees of the present day.
