PRESENTATIONS TO DEPARTING SOLDIERS.
Corporal H. S. lies and Sapper H. E. H. Robinson, of Redcliffs, were the guests at a farewell gatheriugj of the employees of Messrs Andersons', Ltd., on Tuesday. Mr H. Evans, foreman of the oil engine department, in expressing the good wishes of the workers, presented them, on behalf of the combined employees, with a safety razor and wristlet watch respectively. The speaker also presented the soldiers with pipes ,and tobacco pouches. Both men suitably responded. It being) the eve of Corporal Ilea's wedding, he was presented, on behalf of the oil-engine shop, with a case of silverware. Expressions of God-speed and a safe return, followed by lusty cheering, .closed the gathering. On Thursday evening the Oxford Terrace Baptist Schoolroom was filled by a large gathering of young people to say farewell to five young men who are leaving for the front: Sergeant R. Cornwall and Private H. Falla, who are leaving for the second time, and Lance-Corporal C. Ingold, Private It. E. Voller, and Sapper H. Dawson. A" letter of apology was sent by the Rev J. J. North for his unavoidable absence and commending the good qualities of the guests as soldiers of their King and Empire. Hearty cheers were given for the men and for those who let them go. Lance-Corporal Q. Ingold suitably responded. „ _. - . On Wednesday night Sapper A. J. Hardy, of Riccarton, who returned to Wellington on Saturday to go into camp with the Twelfth Reiufoieenients, was farewelled by his friends. He was presented by the Riccarton Domain Lawn Tennis Club with a safety razor, and other gifts he received were a wristlet watch, combination knife, fork and spoon, a balaclava hat, and soldier's note-books. A social was held in the Rolleston School on Wednesday evening to bid farewell to Corporal Ellis, who is leaV*. ing for the front with the 10tH Reinforcements. Musical items were given by Miss Lowe, Mre Wallace and Messrs Gibbard, Oliver, Heal and' Wallace, and recitations by Mr Pearce and Miss Harris. The Rev W. B. Scott delivered a patriotic address. Eulogistio speeches we're made by several residents, wishing Corporal Ellis God-speed and a safe return. During the evening Jlr T. Pearce presented the guest with a pipe and tobacco pouch on behalf of the residents, and Mr Findlay presented him with a money belt on behalf of the Cricket Club. Corporal Ellis suitably responded.
