OBITUARY.

* PROFESSOR G. J. BLACK. [From OrR Correspondent.] DUNEDIN\ December 26. A private message reports the death at Stewart Island of Dr J. G. Black, ex-Professor of Chemistry at the Otago University, in his eightieth year. Tho late Professor J. G. Black was born at Strathbraan, Dunkeld, Scotlaud, on May 10. 1835, and was educated at Trochreo (Drumtochty), Moneydio (Perth), the Free Church Normal School (Edinburgh), and at Edinburgh University. At the lastnamed institution ho was Baxt?r scholar in physical science. He was one of the founders and tho first vicepresident of tho Edinburgh Naturalists' Field Club. Later he became joint rector of Scott and Black's Collegiate Classes, Edinburgh. Dr Black was the first professor of natural scienco at the Otago University, and one of the four colonial analysts for New Zealand, and during his occupancy of the latter office he was a prominent witness in several notable court cases. The late professor was *he original of " Jchn Ross," the Australian professor in lan Maclaren'c "Days of Auld Lang Syne."
