Hie steamer Kurdistan, from Manchester to Marseilles, foundered 460 miles off the Scillv Islands, and of forty-eight aboard only two were rescued.

Tho mailboat Brighton, from Newliaven for Dieppe, was seriously damaged in a collision off Baachy Hoad with tho five-masted ship Proussen, the world's largest sailer, which was bound from Hamburg for Valparaiso. The Proussen, which had a crow of thirty, was afterwards wrecked at Dover. A galo and heavy seas impeded the lifeboat, but tho coastguard by heroic efforts threw rocket apparatus aboard. Attempts at rescue eontinuo.
